What is a Nurse Practitioner?

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with specialized advanced education and clinical competency to provide health care to individuals, families or groups. A Master’s degree is required for entry level practice. The NP is considered a primary care professional capable of practicing in many different settings. An NP is well trained to diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic illnesses and may practice autonomously or in collaboration with other health care providers as well as serve as researchers, consultants and patient advocates.
